Introduction With the spirit of the Quiet Revolution fading, disillusioned members of the Liberal Party of Québec broke away to form a party unlike any Canada had ever seen before. The year 1968 saw the emergence of the Parti Québécois, a party whose basis lies in Québec nationalism, separation from the Canadian federation, and social democracy. There is no question that the Parti Québécois is a nationalist, separatist party. There is question, however, whether the Parti Québécois is truly a social democratic party. What is obvious is that the Parti Québécois elected in 1976 vaguely resembles the Parti Québécois...
purpose, as it produced the most votes.

In conclusion, it is evident that the all-encompassing light of sovereignty is forever present in the affairs and social policies of the Parti Québécois. The purpose of the Parti Québécois was to affirm a sovereign Québec state. The means in which they attempted and failed to convince Québécers was through societal manipulation of a balance. This attempt to transcend class divisions is more a characteristic of a populism than of social democracy. It is, therefore, the title of nationalist populism which is a more sensical designation than that of social democratic.
