In Christianity, Christians use the bible for guidance, various teachings affect the different attitudes towards marriage and divorce. Marriage is seen as being a lifelong commitment, a religious rite in the sight of God, a way in which two people can become blessed by God, and in Orthodox and Catholicism; a sacrament. The love the couple share reflects from the teaching of Paul, the love that Christ has for the church. Christians are excommunicated for a while if they were the guilty party then re-admitted to express their sorrow for the breakdown of their marriage.

Love and forgiveness should be shown to the couple or the innocent party who wish to divorce as marriages can break down for many different reasons, divorces are wholly upsetting times for both the parties.

However most free churches have a more tolerant view towards divorce and we re-marry divorced people but at the same time, the Nonconformist churches and every other denomination preach that marriage should be for life.
