that meant to him coldness and sickness, which is associated to the immage of the repressive church, has a different meaning. "White" after his inlightenment means to him "mortal youth and beauty". In chapter 4, Stephen describes a girl he imagins as having "white fringes" and "feathering of soft white down". "white" is associated to purity, calmness and clearness. The woman image and her beauty is only a symbol to the beauty of art. The woman symbolizes his path of art. As a result of it, he finds his true path and his true desire of being an artist.
