Enzymes are simply protein molecules; they are not living organisms. It is therefore wrong to say that they are killed by heating. Enzyme function is dependent on the specific configuration of the enzyme molecule which is mainly maintained by relatively weak bondings such as ionic, hydrophobic and hydrogen bonds. Heating the molecule above the optimal temperature will disrupt these weak bondings, leading to a loss of the natural configuration of the molecule. If the molecule is not subjected to too high a temperature so that the peptide bonds are still intact, this process is reversible. As only the weak bondings...

substrate molecules.
The two different mechanisms are reflected by the shape of the curve showing the effects of temperature on enzyme activity Fig. 1. The slope of the curve left to the optimum temperature has a temperature quotient of about two Q10 = 2; with a rise in temperature within this range, there is a steady increase in the reaction rate due to increased speed of movement of the substrate molecules. On the other hand, with a rise of temperature above the optimum value, enzyme activity drops drastically due to rapid denaturation of the enzyme molecules.
Scientific Back round: Osmosis is defined as the net movement of water or any other solution's molecules from a region in which they are highly concentrated to a region in which they are less concentrated. This movement must take place across a partially permeable membrane such as...

Introduction Osmosis is defined as the diffusion of water molecules, down a water potential gradient, across a partially permeable membrane. If the solutions on each side of the partially permeable membrane are equally concentrated then there will be no net movement of water across the membrane. If the solution...

Prediction I predict that the more catalase used will speed up the reaction rate between the catalase and hydrogen peroxide. On a graph, as the concentration of catalase is increased the rate of reaction will increase forming a series of positively correlated lines, increasing in gradient as the catalase...

How light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis The aim of my experiment was to determine whether intensity of light would affect the rate of photosynthesis in a plant. To do this, I placed a piece of Canadian pondweed in varying light intensities, and observed the...

Aim: I am going to investigate how different surface areas, and therefore enzyme concentration, of the same volume of potato affects rate of reaction, when placed in 10ml hydrogen peroxide. Prediction: As the surface area increases, so do the amount of enzymes, which are biological catalysts that...
