Mercutio is a unique character in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. His relationships within the play being a 'kinsman to the prince and friend of Romeo' give him a curious involvement, as he is both concerned with Romeo's defence, and yet is detached from it as he is not a Montague and therefore is not actually part of the feud.
